(Reuters) -Elon Musk's brain-chip startup Neuralink said on Tuesday its experimental implant aimed at restoring vision received the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's "breakthrough device" designation. The FDA's breakthrough tag is given to certain medical devices that provide treatment or diagnosis of life-threatening conditions.

Elon Musk’s company, Neuralink, has reached a major milestone with its brain chip. The device, called “Blindsight,” is designed to help blind people regain their vision. Neuralink announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given the implant a special status known as “breakthrough device.”

Neuralink, one of the companies creating brain–computer interfaces (BCIs), has received a “breakthrough device tag” from the FDA for Blindsight, an experimental implant that it hopes can restore human vision. The tag speeds up approval processes leading to human trials.
