Two environmental groups filed a lawsuit against federal, state and Miami-Dade County officials Friday over the immigration detention center under construction in the Everglades known as “Alligator Alcatraz.

T-shirts, hats and beverage coolers touting ‘Alligator Alcatraz’, an ICE immigration detention facility being built in the Everglades, are for sale at the Florida GOP online store.

Plans for the center are largely a response to a nationwide surge in immigration detention. As my colleague Isabela Dias recently reported, the number of people held by ICE now surpasses 56,000—an unprecedented level.
