The New Mexico Supreme Court has struck down abortion restrictions by conservative cities and counties at the request of the state attorney general.

The New Mexico Supreme Court on Thursday ruled against several local ordinances in the state that aim to restrict distribution of the abortion pill. In a unanimous opinion, the court said the ordinances invade the legislature's authority to regulate reproductive care.

The state Supreme Court unanimously ruled local ordinances attempting to restrict access to abortion services are invalid. The ruling comes after ordinances by Hobbs and Clovis, along with Lea and Roosevelt counties. The local laws were created following the U.S. Supreme Court decision to end the federal right to an abortion.
