The production of eggs in the United States dropped by 4% in November, according to the USDA, as prices of eggs continue to rise alongside bird flu cases.

Most large-scale egg producers to whom the law would apply have been working toward cage-free operations for up to a decade.

With the new year comes a new law in Colorado requiring all eggs sold in the state to come from a cage-free facility. This change has been in the works for the last couple of years.

Egg prices rose to a record high in the U.S. recently, hitting $5.27 a carton. Egg prices will remain high this winter as bird flu cases continue to be detected across Iowa and other major egg-producing states.

The bipartisan legislation, originally passed in 2009, was set to take effect at the end of 2019 but was expanded and delayed after pressure from the U.S. Humane Society. The law prohibits the sale of eggs from hens confined in ways that don’t meet cage-free standards.
