Sooner or later all the people of the world will have to discover a way to live together in peace, and thereby transform this pending cosmic elegy into a creative psalm of brotherhood.

The life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will once again be celebrated and honored Monday in events around the nation.

The MLK parade in Newport News featured a special guest appearance by Dr. King’s niece, Rev. Robin Scott-King, who shared the principles by which her uncle lived.

Originally released on home video, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: A Historical Perspective follows a more traditional approach to documentary filmmaking. Narrated by The Transformers voice actor Arthur Burghardt, we see some never-before-scene footage of Dr. King and elements of his life that weren’t covered in the previous documentaries.

MLK Jr.'s son, Martin Luther King III, and his wife, Arndrea Waters King, co-authored the book "What is My Legacy?" with activists and contributors, including Julia Roberts.

In Harlem, New York, while signing copies of his first book, “Stride Toward Freedom,” Izola Ware Curry stabbed King with a letter opener between his heart and lung. He was taken to Harlem Hospital where his physician, Dr. Aubré D. Maynard, said, “If you had sneezed, your aorta would have been punctured and you would have drowned in your own blood.”

It was first proposed four days after King's 1968 assassination outside a Memphis motel. It took 15 years until it became a federal holiday.
